A New Face In Menswear: Trends in Menswear Spring/Summer 2015

In the past there has been a tendency to view menswear design as stale field, working with a solid continuum of styles with only slight stylistic fluctuations and responding to utilitarian needs. In the modern age this is no more. Mens fashion aesthetics constantly evolve as the modern male embraces a diverse cosmopolitan image, leading to a brave new world of individual style. Where better to look for evidence of this evolution, then the menswear collections of Spring/Summer 2015 on the catwalks of London, Milan and Paris which saw an array of trends brilliantly manifesting on the catwalk, to invigorate the discerning males wardrobe.

For this season the approach of summer comes hand in hand with daring use of colors and prints, floral prints were rendered as technical drawings in the case of Givenchy, or in a romantic gentle style for Hermes, they bloomed not only on shirts but also on jackets, Bermuda shorts, scarves and trousers, cast in vibrant tones and pastels. Denim was another notable return, often worn high waisted with hands thrust deep into pockets, moving beyond simple jeans it formed the basis of entire ensembles in the case of Raf Simons, Prada and Dior Homme, or twisted the traditional trench coat, cast in soft pale blue denim at Kenzo.

Suiting remains an essential mainstay of the menswear wardrobe, but in Spring/Summer 2015 there is an emphasis on comfort, with suits lithe and supple at Dries Van Noten, Paul Smith and Cerruti. Another significant aspects of suiting across multiple designers collections was an engagement between sportswear and tailoring, suits were teamed with designer trainers, while shirts beneath blazers were replaced with zip up sweaters and hoodies to channel a directional urban aesthetic. In other outerwear trends, the bomber jacket was the replacement for more formal jackets this season with its distinctive silhouette seen at Hermes, Kris Van Assche and Lanvin.

When the host of trends are read as a whole we can see the Spring/Summer 2015 is characterized by a tailored but relaxed silhouette with a nonchalant romantic feel informing the presentations.
