Donna Karan Keeps it Fresh for Spring/Summer 2015

The prolific Donna Karan, ever a child of New York, declared her Spring/Summer 2015 Collection “urban chic.” Although she had recently traveled to African, Caribbean and Southeast Asian countries, she returned home to design this latest lineup, “The Art of the Street.” Drawing on New York’s historic street art movement for inspiration as per Women's Wear Daily, her bolder pieces have “graffiti-like brush strokes, color splashes and random scribbles as patterns.”

The collection contains classic styles that could have felt too retro, but were updated with modern lines and prints for a fresh appearance. Many pieces use the flattering body wrap style Karan has employed so expertly throughout her career, while others evoke a nostalgia of sweet 1950s silhouettes. Plunging necklines and thigh-high dress slits shared the catwalk with full skirts and high-waisted pants, with the flow of earthy beige, indigo and black being punctuated by vibrant cherry red.

Karan's collections are often designed as interchangeable pieces, and in doing so demonstrate how beautiful and interesting a capsule wardrobe can be. Many pieces in this ready-to-wear collection are bold enough to stand alone, but a few stand by this maxim, such as the strappy black bra top—a gesture to her roots designing bodywear—and knotted blouses. Others can easily be envisioned layered with one another.

We aren't too sure what to think of these slightly Seussical hats, though. Do they make a statement? Absolutely. Are they ready to wear on the streets of New York? That's unlikely.
